Starting an Eco-Friendly Candle Brand From Zero

Memories Candles came to Create Next Studio as a brand-new business. The founder had no website, no existing sales channel, and no established customer base. What she had was a clear passion for home decor and eco-friendly candles, a fully bootstrapped operation, and a vision for what her brand could become.

This wasn't a redesign or a conversion fix. It was building the entire online storefront from the ground up, for a founder entering a crowded, competitive candle market where premium visual presentation matters as much as the product itself.

The Challenge: Selling a Sensory Product Online

Candles are a scent-first product, and scent is the one thing a website can't deliver directly. The core challenge was designing an experience that let visitors imagine and almost feel a scent before ever opening a jar, while building a site premium enough to justify the price point and support a US market launch.

The Approach: Designing for the Senses

A dedicated scent exploration experience

Instead of listing candles as a standard product grid, Create Next built a page dedicated entirely to scent exploration. Each scent became its own visual story: rich imagery, movement, and video paired with each fragrance to suggest how the candle would feel to burn, not just what it looked like on a shelf. The goal was to trigger a sensory association through visuals alone, something most candle sites skip in favor of a straightforward product catalog.

Product pages built around mood, not just specs

Product pages were designed to carry that same sensory storytelling through to purchase, keeping the experience consistent from discovery to checkout.

Checkout aligned to brand

Rather than leaving Shopify's default checkout untouched, we styled the checkout experience to match the rest of the brand, so the premium feel carried through to purchase.

We designed and launched the site in 3 weeks, from start to finish.

The Result

Memories Candles launched with a site that felt elevated and premium from day one, giving the founder a foundation to promote her brand instead of launching with a bare-bones storefront. In her words:

"Annie is wonderful to work with. She is collaborative and helped create the website we needed for our business. We highly recommend Annie and look forward to working with her on future projects."
— Marium, Founder, Memories Candles (Atlantic City, NJ)

How do I sell candles on Shopify?
Start with product pages and a browsing experience that sell the product's sensory qualities, not just list variants. A dedicated scent or experience page can do more work than a standard grid.

What's the best way to create a candle website?
Use visuals and motion to substitute for the physical sensory experience your product can't deliver online, and make sure checkout matches the rest of your brand rather than defaulting to generic Shopify styling.

Should I hire a Shopify designer for a candle brand, or DIY it?
If you're launching a premium or gift-focused candle brand and want the site itself to communicate quality before a customer ever smells the product, working with a designer who specializes in sensory, lifestyle brands (rather than a generic template) makes a measurable difference in how the brand is perceived from day one.
