Aren't all websites the same? You might be wondering why the a big price difference when it comes to website design service pricing across the board. From DIY (free) to thousands of dollars.
When it comes to pricing, there are many factors such as the size of the website (number of pages) and sophistication of the website (capabilities), years of experience and whether you're hiring a designer or a team.
The number of years of experience doesn't necessarily mean good work and effective design because, again, anyone can sign up to Squarespace, Wix or Shopify and start building.
So, what are the key areas business owners should look for when hiring a website designer for their business? (I'm going to skip the stuff like personality and vibe, you'll get a sense of that on a call.)
Conversion-focused design - Critical
This is what separates 90% of amateur designers and graphic designers from professional website designers.
Conversion-focused design means the designer is looking at how to optimize your website to guide users to take action, whether that’s buying a product, booking a service, or reaching out. This skill requires a designer to understand a business’s core values and offerings, user behavior, engaging copywriting and designing layouts that anticipate new and returning visitors. On another note, this is also why website templates are less effective. They don't address the unique needs of individual businesses.
Visual Design
Visual design is important too, it's what we see first, it's an indicator whether a website seems like a credible business or one that can be trusted to do business with.
How do you assess if someone can design a conversion-focused website?
Designers who simply inquire about what you want on your website, how you'd like it to look, and how many pages you need are placing the responsibility on you to know what you want, rather than offering their guidance. This is an indication you'll likely receive just a basic website.
If you currently have a website and feel like it looks ok but not great, something feels off and it's not driving sales for you than maybe it's time to consider a redesign with a conversion focused strategy at it's core.
